Direction and Choreography

Choreography is the creative process of joining movements together. It is the art of telling stories through those movements. Choreography of motion capture performance is far more than just making patterns on the floor or moving faster or slower to keep in time with the storyline. It is an exploration of all the options open to you based on the performer's individual technique. It is telling your a story by interpreting the performance.
Before beginning to choreograph a motion capture session, you need to make sure that the performer(s) you choose are the best for displaying the specific character(s) you want to drive and that the physical skills and the theatrical performer(s) skills are used correctly. Make sure to allocate pre-production rehearsal time to study the job and plan how to best fit the moves together. Plan changes of speed and directions. Those become important throughout the production.
The movements in between your specific movements - the joining bits - are possibly even more crucial and need to be choreographed correctly.
A well choreographed motion capture session can double the number of selected takes that you"ll end up with at the end of the day!
