Virtual balancing during VisDays

04 October 2001Amsterdam - A virtual balancing platform was exhibited during the Virtual Reality and Visualizations Days (Visdagen) in Amsterdam, organized by Platform HPCN.

The system is called CAREN, which is an abbreviation of Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment.

CAREN consists of a moving platform, an optical and magnetic system that registers human movements in real-time and a 3D projector for projection of the virtual surroundings.

The D-FLOW software enables the platform and the surroundings to react on the person's movements. In this way it is possible to create a large amount of virtual environments for training and determining sensorial-kinetic skills.

The CAREN-configuration is specially suited for training and evaluating balance. A CAREN-formation, installed in Groningen in the beginning of 2001, is operational. The Amsterdam-based company MOTEK has developed CAREN. In the future, sensors in clothing will be integrated. New applications such as a driving simulator, training of manual skills and learning to handle cognitive disorders will be integrated as well. (Source: Automatiseringsgids 22-09-01)
