The Human Performance Virtual Reality Lab at the University of Twente

'The Human Performance Virtual Reality Lab’ at the University of Twente is created around a CAREN system delivered by Motek. The system is being used for research about the human coordination, for training at the rehabilitation center 'Het Roessingh' in Enschede and for ergonomic research for new product-design.

The opening ceremony of the Virtual Reality lab at the University of Twente. The rector Magnificus F. A. van Vught officially opened the lab together with his virtual alter ego during a live real-time motion capture session.

Research of Biomechanical engineering at the VR lab

The Human Performance Virtual Reality Lab is a shared laboratory of the biomechanical engineering (http://www.bw.ctw.utwente.nl) & design, production and management (http://www.opm.wb.utwente.nl) Coordinators: Dr.ir Herman van der Kooij and Prof.dr.ir Fred van Houten

Hardware: 6dof motion platform, data gloves, HMD, inertial sensors (XSENS), stereo projection on large screen, VICON RT, Phantom Desktop, FCS Haptic Master, Polhemus Fasttrack, Reachin Display, Infinity box. Software: 3D Studio max SoftImage, Reachin API, Ghost API and many more.

Lab research of Biomechanical engineering:

  • Identification of (models of) balance control. Explanation of the research project.
  • Training of balance control in post-stroke patients. Explanation of the research project.
  • VR based Assessment and Training of hand-eye coordination. Explanation of the research project.
  • VR based Training of compensatory strategies for neglect patients. Explanation of the research project.
